Storyline Online
The Empty Pot Build Background Information Explain that the story is a Chinese folk tale about an emperor who holds a contest for the children of his empire. Explain that folk tales are cultural stories that teach a lesson. Have students share information about contests they have entered and rules that needed to be followed. Show students the location of China on the world map. Listen to the Story and Ask Questions Throughout What do you think will happen next? What has happened so far in the story? Why did the Emperor want to have a contest? What is the problem in the story? Do you think the Emperor was fair? What lesson did Ping learn? Science Connection Plant Seeds and Answer the Question: What do plants need to grow? Draw a picture of a plant or flower, color it in, and label it. I Need My Monster Build Background Knowledge Have you ever been scared to go to bed at night because you thought there was a monster in your room? Do monsters always have to be scary? What makes you feel safe when you go to bed? Make a Story Map include three columns Characters: Who? Make a list of the characters who the story is about. Draw simple pictures with the names. Setting: Where? Make a list of where the story took place. Draw a simple picture and label it. Events: What happened? Write and draw pictures of important events that happened in the story. Writing Which was your favorite monster? Tell why. Use a piece of paper, write your answer to the above question using the below sentence starters, and then draw a picture to match. My favorite monster is ___. I like this monster because ___. Math Connection (Counting and Identifying Numbers 1-10) Build a Monster with 1 body, 2 of a certain body part, 3 of a certain body part, etc. all the way to 10 Body Part Ideas (arms, legs, fingers, toes, heads, eyes, noses, ears, hair, etc.) Art Connection Draw a picture of a nice monster. Write a story explaining what makes the monster so nice. |
Carla's Sandwich Questions Would you eat any of Carla's sandwiches? What would/should you do if someone near you was eating a food you had never tried before or though was gross? Connection Make a 2 column chart (foods I like/foods I don't like) What is your favorite sandwich? What do you need to make it? Can you make it on your own? Art Cut out pictures of food from your parents old magazines and sort them. Put all the fruit together, etc. Imagination Create a new sandwich of your own. Draw a picture of you eating it and tell me what is in your sandwich. Draw a picture of you and your friends all eating one of Carla's sandwiches. |
Arnie the Doughnut Build Background Knowledge What are different kinds of doughnuts? How are doughnuts made? Where are doughnuts made? Where can you buy doughnuts? Read the Book Show students the cover of the book. Ask them what they think the book might be about. Use sequence words to describe the order of events in the story. Draw a diagram to show these events in order. Questions Do the other doughnuts feel the same ways Arnie about being eaten? Use details to support your answer. Imagination Pick your favorite food and have it come to life! Name it, give it clothes, and write a story about it. Write a sequel to Arnie the Doughnut. Draw a picture of you and Arnie in the doughnut shop. |
